Eyewear improve someone’s life in three main ways. It can be used for vision correction, eye protection, and as a fashion accessory.

History of Eyewear

Vision correction first recorded in Egyptian hieroglyphics from the 5th century BC, which mentions the glass lens. In the third century AD a Seneca the Younger wrote that letters can be seen more clearly through the glass which is filled with water. In the 9th century Ibn Firnas Abbaz used corrective lenses. He polished glass stones that can be used for reading. Glass was invented in the late 13th century in Italy. These glasses have initially convex lens can correct nearsighted and influence of developing presbyopia, such as aged persons. Ben Franklin was afflicted with near-sightedness and presbyopia. He was annoyed by the need to keep changing glasses. So, in 1794, he found his glasses.

The purpose of corrective lenses is to change the focal length of the eye. These changes improve or eliminate the problem of nearsightedness and farsightedness. The general problem of “middle-aged eyes,” or difficulty in reading without glasses for parents is called presbyopia. It stems from the eye lens becomes rigid. Loss of elasticity reduces the ability of the lens to focus the eye on close objects. Thus, the ability to read the book, thread a needle, or tell time watching severely affected.

Protective Eyewear

Safety glasses with non-broken lenses are used to guard against debris. Medical personnel need to protect themselves from the patient’s body fluids. Factory workers need safety glasses with thick lenses and a strong frame with side shields. Welders should use special glasses to protect them from sparks and a flash of welding torches.

Fashion Eyewear
